Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle on their new Hulu show 'Pen15'

Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle join us to discuss their new coming of age show Pen15. It’s a show about middle school. Or, more accurately: it's about a version of middle school you might have actually experienced. The show is set in the year 2000 with plenty of cuts from N*SYNC and Lit and Mandy Moore. The characters wear Bebe tanks, Ruff Ryders shirts and UFO pants. It's a show about kids that definitely isn't for kids - sex and menstruation come up a bit, for example. The show digs deeper into what it means to be 12 or 13. A time in your life when a lot of kids are very, very insecure.

On Pen15, Maya and Anna play middle school aged versions of themselves. They’re best friends. Maya has a bowl cut. Anna has braces. They're starting 7th grade at the beginning of the show and while 6th grade wasn't great, they have a pretty good feeling that this year is gonna be different.

Maya and Anna tell us how they mined stories from their own lives to make the show. And why they cast Richard Karn - yes, Al from Home Improvement - as Maya's dad.

Pen15 is now streaming on Hulu

Jordan, Jesse, Go! Episode 577: Dry Sub with Aimee Mann

Aimee Mann

Aimee Mann (The Art of Process, Mental Illness album) joins Jordan and Jesse for a discussion of how Hugh Jackman is playing Jesse’s dream role of Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man on Broadway, the bartender at Dave and Busters who recognized Jordan, and whether or not more people in the audience wore bowling shoes in everyday life than own a fez. Plus, Aimee talks about her new MaxFun podcast that she hosts with Ted Leo, The Art of Process.

It's MaxFunDrive time and Aimee has an amazing new challenge reward if we meet our goal of 25,000 new and upgrading donors -- she's going to write a song about Jordan's cat, Bug! Donate so we can hear that song!

The Greatest Discovery Ep 45: Taint on Taint (S2E10)

When an unsettling secret is revealed to Burnham, she serves up some two-fisted justice. But when Michael is also found to have a link to the Red Angel, it's time to take the satellites out of the Shenzhou's backyard and re-direct them on Michael's death. Does Culber find Bob? Is the Red Angel also tethered to a shadow? What just happened?

It's the episode that deletes one memory, while altering others.

Ep. 7 - Money Mark Nishita "I Gotta Find my Own Ice Cream"

Mark Nishita

In this episode, we sat down with "Money Mark," Mark Nishita, musician, inventor, producer, etc. We touch on everything from being a middle child, to the Chinese Exclusion Act, piano rolls, and the macho/privileged side of crate digging for break beats with the Beastie Boys. A couple of things that don't necessarily NEED explaining, but that I will anyway, are that:
1. Mark references a panel that he and I were on at South by Southwest in 2018. It was broadly about surviving and adapting as an artist in the changing business/media/technological environment, and I found his contributions to the discussion to be smart, inspiring, and challenging. I think I immediately texted Aimee and suggested we interview him for the podcast.
2. In our introduction, I started down a path of bringing up a song about music that I actually LIKE, before we got sidetracked down Main St. into Seegerville. The song I was going to bring up is "Geno," by Dexy's Midnight Runners. This was doubly relevant in that it has recently been a hot topic of conversation among a number friends and other podcast hosts that Aimee feels that, in her life, she has heard "Come on Eileen" enough times to warrant not really wanting to ever hear it again. This news came out on an episode of Judge John Hodgman the same week that I was performing in a Dexy's Midnight Runners tribute band at the Bell House in Brooklyn, and I very much enjoyed singing "Come on Eileen."
